Message I've been raised with them my entire life, along with a bunch of other dogs including a Dobie, Rott, 2 Dalmations, and a Jack. I found the Shepherd to be the best dog for, and I was able to build a stronger relationship with them than any other dogAll are intelligent and good looking dogs but I think the "It's not the breed of the dog that makes it vicious, but how you raise it" statement is partially false. While I do believe that how you raise it is very important, and the first 4 months of its life are the most impressionable, breeds do matter; they've been bred for certain qualities for a purpose. Don't automatically assume that all Dobies or all "mean looking" dogs will be like your friend's well trained and good natured one. Within breeds like Rotts and Dobies and Pitts, are many different personalities. I have had 2 of the sweetest Shepherds before, and I swear they had the brain of human beings. They didn't act like dogs, they acted like people. When we got another Shepherd, this one turned out to be the opposite. No matter what amount of training she (and I say she, not he) has had, she is much more aggresive than any other dog I have had. As a puppy she was perfectly fine. Once she hit a certain age, I think she thought she was a boy dog or something. She is very overprotective, which is a fault in that breed. She may be the sweetest dog to me, but once a stranger comes along, it's a transformation. Sometimes I think I should have gotten a Rott instead.

Golden Retrievers are really good family dogs, except they will ALWAYS want to be with you, so unless you plan on sharing everything with him. And like I said, different personalities within a breed....some are smart and some are really dumb.

Either way, NEVER buy a dog from a pet store or backyard breeder. Find a reputable breeder and research, and make sure you do the puppy test on the puppy you're looking at, and you see and meet BOTH parents. Go look at the pound. They have a lot of cool looking and great mutts and purebreeds.
